Who Can Join Medisky Oboe Studio?

High School Students
See the Audition Requirements page for audition info
  • Recommended Book: Barret Oboe Method

Middle School Students
See the Audition Requirements page for audition info.
  • Recommended Book:  Gekeler Oboe Method, Book One or Barret Oboe Method, depending on current grade & playing ability

First Year Players
These are students that already have some experience playing, and are still in their first year of playing in their school band program. They should be able to read music, and have knowledge of rhythms, and oboe fingerings. First Year Players may audition to join the studio and study with Laura, or sign up for the Student Teacher Program. See the Audition Requirements page for audition info.
  • Recommended Book: Gekeler Oboe Method, Book One

Beginners
No audition necessary. For complete beginners, lessons can be short term just to get you started. Beginners must be signed up for their school band program. We'll work on the foundations of oboe playing, from putting the oboe together to how to form an embouchure and control the breath. Beginners may also opt to sign up for the Student Teacher Program.

If students decide they want to commit to lessons and officially join the studio, they can take the First Year Player audition when they are ready!
  • Recommended Book: Student Instrumental Course Oboe Student: Level I

Adults
Adult students are also welcome! No audition necessary. Lesson frequency and scheduling is flexible and based on your needs.
Medisky Oboe Studio is open to students of all levels. Membership into the studio is by audition for most students (click HERE for audition info). Students should meet the following requirements:

  • There will be a one-month (4 lesson) trial period to ensure that both the student and teacher work well together
  • Expectations of each student:
                      -  be engaged during the lesson
                      -  practice outside of lessons and band class
                      -  demonstrate commitment to practicing lesson assignments

Read more about Medisky Oboe Studio here, and feel free to email Laura if you have any questions!

* note: The studio is capped at 15 students. When full, prospective students will be offered a place on the waiting list.
