About Medisky Oboe Studio LLC

Located on the west side of Madison, Medisky Oboe Studio accepts students of all ages and levels. While developing the foundations of oboe playing, students learn skills for consistent, committed practice and ongoing musical growth.

Medisky Oboe Studio fosters independence, confidence, critical thinking and self-evaluation, guiding students to establish their individual musicianship through practice strategies and performance skills. All new students are required to complete an audition to join the studio.

Annual Spring Studio Recital
Medisky Oboe Studio features a studio recital at the end of each school year, and all students are invited to perform solos and play in the oboe choir finale piece. Performing is a rewarding part of being a musician, and this is a great opportunity for students to share what they have learned and to play with other oboists!
Oboe Dojo
Oboe Dojo is a fun spin on the martial arts model of earning belts as students progress and achieve specific technical requirements. Instead of belts, students earn ribbons that they can collect and attach to their cases.
Fall Studio Activities
Each Fall kicks off with a studio-wide activity or technique challenge to work on the foundations of oboe playing. Depending on the year, students may focus on learning scales, arpeggios, or thirds, and pass playing tests in their lessons to earn points. Other activities include an etude challenge, and Deliberate Practice Roulette. In challenge years, prizes are awarded to the top three point-earners, but everyone is a winner because scales, arpeggios, and thirds are so much fun!
Reed Classes
When schedules allow, I will offer 2-4 reed classes each month. There is a $10 fee to attend reed class, and all student are welcome to attend, regardless of reed-making experience. I have reed tools available to borrow, and reed-making kit recommendations can be found on the Reed & Supplies page.

Special Topic Classes
From time to time special topic classes will be offered, and are included in studio membership tuition. Summer classes are only open to students taking summer lessons. Past topics include:
  • Oboe adjustments
  • Oboe cleaning
  • Stage Presence/Performance Energy
  • Alexander Technique
WYSO Mock Auditions
Each spring I hold 1-2 mock auditions for students to practice performing their WYSO audition materials. Everyone performs their solos, audition excerpts & scales, and sight-reading in front of the group. This a good chance to work on tempering nerves, and practice performing a variety of things in a short amount of time.

Studio Activities

The Studio Reeder
All students and family members will receive the Medisky Oboe Studio e-newsletter on the first day of each month, featuring Studio announcements, student news, events, and more!
